The Photographers' Gallery CSS Takeover

2026 · Commissioned CSS takeover of an existing website · The Photographers' Gallery, London & Online

I was invited by Sam Mercer of The Photographers' Gallery in London to create a CSS takeover of their exploratory photography blog, unthinking.photography.

Sam and I discussed what the blog was about, its goals, its relationship to the web, and the relationship of networked photography and images on the web.

What I came up with was something that was playful and set a little outside any particular era or aesthetic of web design, but instead worked to reference the celluloid-like quality that transparency, tinting and contrast can produce on a digital screen.

The goal for me was to create a temporal narrative in the visual design, linking both the networked digital present of the blog's subject, to the deeper more analogue past of the gallery and its photographic legacy; while also making the actual process of browsing and reading the blog more exploratory and fun with hidden shelves and texts that pop out as you move your mouse.
